Anatomical Planes Flashcards
Sagittal
Divides body into left and right sides by putting a divide down the dorsal of an animal
Transverse
Divides body into cranial and caudal parts by dividing the animal in half. CAN ALSO divide body into perpendicular to sagittal plane or long axis of an organ or limb
Frontal
Parallel to dorsal surface, divides body into dorsal and ventral parts
Parasagittal
Divides body into unequal left and right sides parallel to midline. Hint: A plane that falls under the sagittal plane
Mid-sagittal (median)
Divides body along midline into equal left and right sides
Plane
A cut through a plane = a section used to see internal structures
Sections
Are generally named after the planes
Cross section
transverse section
Longitudinal section
Section parallel to the long axis of the structure; can be through the sagittal or frontal planes
