Sesamoid Bones
A
Ex; patella, fabellae
- Found within tendons
- Prevent wear of tendons as they pass over bony prominences
- Increase the leverage a muscle can exert by moving the tendon farther from the axis of adjacent joint
- Be able to recognize on radiographs!

Splanchnic bones
A
- Develop the soft organs, remote from the rest of the skeleton
- Os penis (= baculum ex; canine penis)
- Ossa cordis (ex bovine heart)

Pneumatic bones
A
- Contains air spaces (ex; paranasal sinuses)
- Communicate with nasal cavity (ex; bird skeleton; communicate with respiratory organs)
