Sonata
3 main sections;
Exposition - Themes are heard for the first time (exposed)
Development - themes go through interesting twists & turns
Recapitulation - themes are played again (recapped)
Call and Response
A question an answer - between two groups of musicians - leader and the rest of the group - Indian & African music
Minuet & Trio
Contrasting sections - French dance with 3 beats in a bar
Strophic Form
Same section of music is repeated over and over with no changes - Classical, Folk, Blues & Pop music - Music for each verse is the same but lyrics change in every verse
Continuo
A continuous bass part- Baroque period - harpsichord & cello
Cadenza
Bit of music played by a soloist - usually in the middle of a concerto
Pop songs
Usually have an intro - grabs people’s attentions - verse-chorus-verse-chorus
Riff
Short section of music which is repeated - drums/bass guitar
