Structure determination Flashcards
1
Q
Why is TMS a suitable standard?
A
- Inert/Non-toxic
- Volatile so easily removed
- Single intense peak as it has 12 protons/ 4C in same environment
- Peak is well away from others
2
Q
Why is CDCl3 a good solvent?
A
allow no hydrogen atoms
3
Q
How is the fingerprint region used to identify a compound
A
- Compare spectrum with the spectrum of the known compound
- Should be exact match
4
Q
Why does X leave column after Y
A
- X has greater affinity to stationary phase
5
Q
How can chromatography be used to separate a mixture of a compound?
A
- solvent is the mobile phase
- separation depends on solubility in mobile phase
- stationary phase e.g resin
- separation also depends on affinity of compounds in stationary phase
- different retention as compounds travel at different speeds so they take different times
