Structure and uses of materials Flashcards
Can you give the definition of an element, a compound and a mixture?
Element: A substance that contains only one type of atom
Compound: a substance with Two or more elements chemically joined together
Mixture: A substance with two or more elements mixed together easily separated
Write the formula of a compound and be able to write chemical equations
MgCO3 = 1 atom, 1 carbon, 3 atoms of oxygen
Name products from simple, chemical reactions
Magnesium + Oxygen = magnesium-oxide
Explain what some of the uses of metal are
Shiny, good conductor of heat and good conductor of electricity
Explain the difference between carbon in the form of diamond and in the form of graphite and graphene
Diamond: Each carbon atom is joined to 4 other carbon atoms. The bonds between the atoms are strong and difficult to break. This makes diamonds very hard and has very high melting point, and that it is insoluble in water.
Graphite: Each carbon atom forms three bonds with other carbon atoms and they form layers that are able to slide over each other. This makes graphite a soft material that feels
Graphene: This is a single layer of carbon atoms. Strong good conductor of electricity
