Plant reproduction Flashcards
Name the parts of a flower and describe the function of them
Petal: attracts insects
Sepal: protects bud
Carpel: female part
Stamen: male part
Stigma: catches polen
Ovary: contains ovules
Pollen: male sex cell
Ovule: female sex cell
Filament: supports anther
Anther: makes pollen
Describe the different features of both insect and wind pollinated flowers
Insect flowers: colourful, nice smell to attract insects
Pollinated flowers: small flowers, lack of colour, produce lightweight powdery pollen, carried by the wind
Explain how we can decide if pollen grains are carried by wind or insects by looking at their structure
Insect pollinated flowers: large pollen grains with a rough surface to help stick to insects body
Wind pollinated: small pollen grains with smooth surface
What is fertilisation?
Joining of the pollen, and of you nuclei to form a seed
Draw a flowchart to show the different steps in plant reproduction
Seed —> produce a plant —> mature plant flower —> pollinating
Can you label a diagram of the parts of a seed?
Plumule Testa
New plant—>
Radicle Cotyledon
What are the three conditions for seed germination?
Water, oxygen and warmth
