Structure and Components of the Plasma Membrane Flashcards
defines the cell, outlines its borders, and determines the nature of its interactions
Cell Membrane
Main fabric of the membrane, controls the movement of substances in and out of the cell
Phospholipid
Helps in cell recognition, cell adhesion, and protection. Helps cell communicate.
Carbohydrates
Spans the entire width of the cell. Have hydrophobic region that interacts with the membranes interior and hydrophilic regions in the cell’s environment. Helps in transporting molecules across the membrane, acting as channels or pumps.
Integral Proteins
Located on the inner or outer surface of the membrane but does not penetrate the hydrophobic core. Helps with signaling, maintaining the cell shape, and supporting the membrane
Peripheral Proteins
Water loving
Hydrophilic
Water hating
Hydrophobic
