Structure and bonding T2 Flashcards
What are ions?
Ions are charged particles - they can be single atoms or a group or a group of atoms
What is another name for negative ions and what are they?
Negative ions (also known as anions) form when atoms gain electrons - they have more electrons than protons
What is another name for positive ions and what are they?
Positive ions (also known as cations) for when atoms lose electrons - they have more protons than electrons
Why are group 1 and group 2 elements most likely to form ions?
Because they will lose elcetrons
What is the overall charge of an ionic compound?
Zero
What happens when a metal and non metal react together?
The metal atom loses electrons to form a positive ion, and the non - metal gains these electrons
What do features do ionic compounds have?
Ionic compounds have high melting and boiling points due to strong atttraction
What is a covalent bond?
A covalent bond is a strong bond that forms when a pair of electrons is shared between 2 atoms
