Structural, Physiological and Behavioral adaptions Flashcards
What are adaptions?
Inherited characteristics/traits that help an organism to survive long enough to reproduce more sucessfully in its changing environment
What are behavioral adaptions
- An action or behavior an animal does in order to survive. This has either developed or changed over time to increase its chance of survival.
Outline an example of a Behavioral adaption
- migration, hibernation, learned behavior, alteration in the mode of reproduction, altered feeding habits, and distinct modes of communication.
Define Physiological Adaptions
- Refers to internal adaptions such as venom or temperature resistance, that allows the animal to become better suited to its environment.
Outline or describe an example of a Physiological Adaption
- Camouflage, frost tolerance, venom, psychic abilities, increased hearing.
Define Structural Adaptions
- Physical features that make an organism well suited to the environment that it lives in.
Outline and describe one example of a Structural Adaption
- Increased leg strength.
- Flexible jaw of a snake.
- Ducks webbed feet helping its swimming ability.
Define Tolerance
Ability of living organisms to withstand little unfavorable changes in the environment, which affect their survival.
Describe what “zone of intolerance is”
- No chance of survival, the conditions have made it impossible for that animal/species/population to survive.
Descibe “optimum range of intolerance is”
- The species/population/animal is thriving, surviving and reproducing.
Outline an example of a factor that can affect the tolerance range
- Temperature.
- Availability of food.
- Reproduction rates.
