Ethical issues with cloning Flashcards
Explain the complication of animal suffering by somatic nuclear transfer
SCNT attempts are often unsuccessful. Normally producing unviable offspring or even resulting in miscarriage during pregnancy. if the offspring were to survive birth they often suffer from severe developmental abnormalities. Finally life expectancy is much lower.
Explain in terms of SCNT of human cloning
Application of SCNT is illegal in many counties including australia. Arguments include opposition to mass destruction of egg cells and embryos from failed attempts. As well as issues surrounding unethical sourcing of eggs.
Explain, from an ethical stance, issues with, alteration of embryos.
Some believe that embryo alteration is acceptable and others argue that embryos should never be altered.
Explain causes to genetic diversity as a result of Embryo Splitting.
By producing genetically and physically identical offspring, genetic diversity is reduced. This can leave a population susceptible to disease and environmental change effects.
Outline the 3 implications with cloning
Social, legal and ethical.
Explain high failure rates with cloning
- SCNT offspring production rates are normally unsuccessful.
- Failiure can occur in the nuclear transfer stage.
Explain the issue “Concern with welfare of animals”
many cloned animals have impaired immune systems, organ malfunctions and many other medical problems through life.
