Strong and Weak Acids and Bases Flashcards
what is meant by the term monoprotic/monobasic?
an acid which is capable of donating only one hydrogen ion per molecule
what is meant by the term diprotic/dibasic?
an acid which can donate two hydrogen ions per molecule
what is meant by a strong acid?
an acid which has a high degree of dissociation/dissociates fully in water
what is meant by a weak acid?
an acid which has a low degree of dissociation and only partially dissociates in solution
three examples of strong acids:
hydrochloric acid
nitric acid
sulfuric acid
examples of weak acids:
carboxylic acids
what is a base?
any substance that acts with an acid by accepting a proton
what is an alkali?
a soluble base
what is a strong base?
a base which dissociates fully in aqueous solution
what is a weak base?
a base which only partially dissociate in aqueous solution
two examples of a strong base:
sodium hydroxide
potassium hydroxide
example of a weak base:
ammonia
what symbol represents the acid dissociation constant?
Ka
what is formed by a weak base by reacting it with water?
a very strong conjugate acid
