Strokes Flashcards
Define a stroke
Rapid death of brain tissue due to disturbance in bloody supply
Name the two types of stroke
Ischemic
Hemorrhagic
What is ischemic
Loss of blood flow to brain tissue
What is hemorrhagic
Bleeding onto brain or surface of brain
Name the 2 pairs of arteries
Anterior supply consists of left and right carotid arteries
Posterior supply consists of left and right vertebral arteries
What are the two vertebral arteries known as
Basilar artery
What parts of the brain do the anterior and posterior supplies supply
Anterior supplies front and middle portions
Posterior supplies back portion and brainstem
What other arteries are there
Anterior and posterior communicating arteries
Where is a common site for aneurysms
Junction between anterior communicating and anterior cerebral
What is the function of the communicating arteries
They allow for crossover flow to prevent damage to the brain when there is a disruption of flow to the brain
What percentage of strokes are ischemic
80%
What are the three types of ischemic
Thrombus
Embolism
Global loss of blood flow
