Hemorrhagic- Intracerebal Flashcards
What is an intracerebral haemorrhage
Bleeding within the substance of the brain
What are the causes
Hypertension Trauma Bleeding disorder Vascular malformation Amyloid angiopathy Drug abuse
Describe the vascular system branching structure
Arteries divide into smaller branches Into capillaries Where red blood cells go through single file Capillaries interface with tiny venules Which join together to form veins
What is the blood pressure in this structure
Steady decline in blood pressure at each level
Why is the blood pressure low at capillary level
If capillaries were exposed to much higher pressures they would rupture
So what happens in arteriovenous malformation?
This normal branching structure is absent
Instead there is a large feeder artery entering a nidus of small abnormal arterioles and on the venous side is one large vein
What does this malformation cause?
High blood flow through the nidus
Hematoma forms and grows until the pressure surrounding it limits expansion or it decompresses itself by rupturing into the csf system
What effect does an intracerebral haemorrhage have
Can have a devastating effect
Can rupture neurons irreversibly
