Hemorrhagic- Subarachnoid Flashcards
What is a subarachnoid haemorrhage
Occurs on the surface of the brain
What is the cause
Rupture of an aneurysm
What percent of aneurysms form in the circle of willis
85%
Name the risk factors
Smoking Heavy use of alcohol Oestrogen deficiency High blood pressure Antocoagulation Statin drugs Genetic Sympathomimetics
Why do aneurysms form
Structural weakness in blood vessels
Which arteries are particularly susceptible to them
Those carrying high flow I.e those in the circle of willis
Lesions 1cm over larger will what?
Grow and rupture
What happens when they rupture
Bleeding spreads across the surface of the brain rapidly via csf
How long does the bleeding last
A few seconds but re bleeding may occur
When does re bleeding usually occur
Within the first 24 hours
What is the biggest cause of death or disability after a subarachnoid
Vasospasm
What is vasospasm
Extreme narrowing of arteries usually within 3 days of initial rupture
Why does vasospasm occur
Chemical irritation of blood vessel walls by breakdown products of hemorrhaged blood
What determines the size and depth of subsequent strokes
Duration of vasospasm and location of vessels affected
