"STROKE"CEREVRAL VASCULAR ACCIDENT/neurological emergencies cont. Flashcards
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) “Stroke”
A ___ neurologic disorder caused by destruction of
___ substance due to â decrease in blood flow as a result of
___ (rupture) or blockage (ischemic)-
____/___
focal
brain
hemorrhage
thrombosis/embolism
Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) “Stroke” is the __ leading cause of death in U.S 1 stroke every minute
3
Who is at risk for a STROKE
- Atherosclerosis
- Atrial fibrilation
- Oral contraceptives and estrogen hormones
- Older women-menopause
- Diabetics
- Transient ischemic attacks/mini strokes
2 Types of Strokes
Which is most common
- Hemmorhagic Stroke
- Intracerebral: rupture of a blood vessel within the brain
- Subarachnoid: rupture of a blood vessel on the surface of the brain - Ischemic Stroke- Most common
- Thromotic Stroke
- Embolic Stroke
when blood from an artery begins bleeding
into the brain.
Hemmorhagic Stroke
It is usually caused by a blood clot or other substanace that blocks or plugs a blood vessel in the brain.
Ischemic Stroke
Factors that could lead to hemorrhagic stroke
hypertension anticoagulation tumor substance abuse aneuysm increased risk for falling-injury
** Stroke mimics ____!What do you do to rule out
hypoglycemia
Test blood glucose
What is the simple stroke test: American Stroke Association
Face: Can they smile. Has there face fallen on one side?
Arms: Can they raise both hands and keep them their?
Speech: Is there speech slurred
Time: Time to call 911 if they show signs
Treatment for stroke in hospital
- CT scan to determine etiology
- Hemorrhagic- consultation with neurosurgeon for surgery
- Ischemic: <3 hours onset of symptoms then IV throbolytic therapy with altaplase (r-tPA) removes thrombus or embolus to restore blood flow
- Ineffective after 3 hours
- Contraindicated for hemorrhagic CVA
