What are the types of stroke?
Ischemic stroke (thrombotic and embolic), Hemorrhagic Stroke, transient ischemic attack
What is a thrombotic stroke?
Caused by a clot/blockage
What is an embolic stroke?
Blood clot breaks off and blocks a smaller artery
What are the types of hemorrhage?
Intracranial hemorrhage (somewhere in cranil vault below the meninges), subarachnoid hemorrhage (below arachnoid membrane)
What is the mortality rate of hemorrhagic stroke vs ischemic stroke?
Hemorrhagic 15% higher mortality rate
Which type of stroke occurs more frequently?
Ischemic
What is a transient ischemic attack?
Stroke that resolves in less than 24 hours without medication or treatment
What is the BEFAST pneumonic for identifying a stroke?
Balance loss, Eyes blur, Face droop, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call 911
What is a thrombotic?
Medication that breaks down thrombis
What are two surgical treatments for stroke?
Altiplace(needs donw 0-4.5 hours from last known well)
Tenectoplace (needs down 0-24 hours from last known well, or unknown last known well. Better efficacy, not FDA approved
