What are some non modifiable risk factors for a stroke?
Age, gender, race, heredity/family hx
What are some modifiable risk factors?
Smoking, HTN, heart disease, ETOH, poor diet, drugs, obesity, sedentary, metabolic syndrome.
If blood flow to the brain is completely interrupted than how long will it take for cellular death?
Metabolism stops in how long?
Neurologic metabolism is altered in how long?

How does the brain auto regulate if stroke occurs?
Changes BP and blood vessel diameter.
How quickly do most TIA’s resolve?
3 hours.
TIA’s will cause what?
Temporary loss of neurologic function.
What are the two types of ischemic strokes?
Thrombotic and
Embolic
What is a thrombotic stroke?
Plaque narrows the artery then clot can form.
What is an embolotic stroke?
Traveling clot, then gets lodged in a vessel thats too narrow.
80% of all strokes are?
Ischemic
What is the most common cause of hemorrhagic stroke?
HTN
How fast should a CT be obtained when pt arrives to ER?
Within 25 minutes.
Read within 45 minutes, to determine what type of stroke and location.
What are the most obvious effects of a stroke?
Impaired:
Mobility, resp function, swallow and speech, gag reflex, self care abilities.
How soon must tPA be given after onset of symptoms?
Within 3 hours. Not for a hemorrhagic stroke.
