Stroke Flashcards
What is stroke
A condition in which neurological deficits result from a sudden decrease in blood flow to a localised area of the brain causing sudden death of brain cells (infarction)
Ischemic stroke
Area of he brain deprived of blood often due to either thrombus (clot formation) or embolism (travelling clot). Rapid and appropriate treatment with thrombocytopenia and anticoagulants therapy reduces neurological deficit
Haemorrhaging stroke
Area of bleeding due to vessel wall rupture, associated with higher morbidity and mortality than ischemic stroke. Treatment strategies include management of hypertension, surgical resection of arteriovenous malformation, and clipping of aneurysm
Risk factors
Modifiable :
Smoking, alcohol, lack of exercise, poor diet,’obesity, hypertension
Mom modifiable: Age Gender Ethnicity Family history Heart disease
Nursing management
Ensure patient airway Remove dentures Perform pulse oximetry Establish IV access with normal saline Obtain CT scan Keep patient NBM until swallow screen assessed Decrease BP
Pharmacological management
No anticoagulation due to increased risk of haemorrhage
Thrombocytopenia therapy to remove clot
