What does CVA stand for?
Cerebrovascular accident
What are the 2 types of CVAs?
Ischaemic/Infarct of the brain, and intracranial haemorrhage.
What is the medical term for a “Mini-stroke”?
TIA, trans ischaemic attack
What can obstruct the blood supply to the brain, causing a stroke?
Thrombus formation, embulus formations, atherosclerosis, shock or vasculitis
Name some things that will increase your risk of stroke
AF, obesity, smoking, previous stroke, CVD, diabetes, HTN, COCP
What is the most common type of stroke to occur?
Ischaemic stroke, caused by a blockage to the blood vessels
What is the acronym we use to detect a stroke?
F Face
A arms
S speech
T time
What is the window for thrombolysis?
4 hours
What is the thrombolytic of choice?
Anteplase
If your patient presents with strok symptoms within 24 hours of onset, what should you treat them with?
Aspirin
If you prescribe you pt aspirin, what else should you check for to see whether they need additional medications?
Ask if there is a Hx of dyspepsia, as if there is they will need to be prescribe a PPI with the aspirin
What type of stroke will show in a CT scan straight away?
Haemorrhagic stroke
How do you treat a haemorrhagic stroke?
You can operate to clip the bleed, remove the haematoma and decrease the ICP. Or you can conservatively manage the patient until the blood is reabsorbed
What is the medications patients should be on post stroke?
Clopidogrel, and a statin at least 48 hours after the stroke
How long should a patient not be driving for after they have had a stroke?
At least 1 month
