Stretching Techniques Flashcards
1
Q
What is a mechanical method of introducing force to connective tissue that has shortened?
A
Stretching
2
Q
What are the indications of stretching?
A
- Decreased range of motion
- Increase mobility of tissue
3
Q
How to perform longitudinal stretch?
A
- Put the target muscle or group into a direction of ease
- Choose a method to prepare the muscle
- Stretch the muscle to its physiologic or pathologic barrier, back of slightly
- Exert movement / pressure with inhalation and stretch on the exhalation
- Hold up to 30 seconds minimum
4
Q
How to perform alternate technique?
A
- Used if only small section of muscle needs to stretch, joint movement does not allow stretching
- Locate the fibers or muscle to be stretched
- Place hands, fingers or forearms in the belly of the muscle or directly over the area to be stretched
- Contract the muscle wit sufficient pressure to reset the neuromuscular mechanism
5
Q
What are the effects of stretching?
A
- Increase pliability of connective tissue
6
Q
What are the contraindications of stretching?
A
- Fractures
- Skin lesions
- Torn connective tissue
- Pushing past the physiologic barrier or anatomic barrier
- Tissue fragility
