Origin & Insertion Technique / GTO Release Flashcards
1
Q
What is a direct technique that compresses the golgi tendon organ and is used to decrease alpha motor neuron?
A
GTO release
2
Q
What are the indications for GTO release?
A
- Muscle hypertonicity
- Decreased range of motion
- Muscle too painful to work directly on it
- Muscle spasm
3
Q
How to perform GTO?`
A
- Therapist uses reinforced thumbs or fingers and holds a tendon for a minimum of 30 seconds or until muscle relaxes
- Pressure should be aware from the muscle belly
- Rate is slow
- Pressure is moderate or deep
4
Q
What are the effects of GTO release?
A
- Relaxation effect to muscle
- Reduces muscle tone
- Reduces muscle spasm
5
Q
What are the contraindications of GTO release?
A
- Locally painful conditions
- Local acute conditions affecting tendon
- Hypotonic or atonic muscles
- Tissue fragility
- Pathologies of connective tissue
- Skin lesions
6
Q
What is a variation of GTO release, creates an inhibition on alpha motor neuron by stimulating the GTO and creating muscle relaxation and used when tendon to be treated is short?
A
Origin & Insertion Technique
7
Q
What are the indications of origin and insertion technique?
A
- Muscle spasm
- Muscle hypertonicity
- Muscle tendon is too short to perform GTO releaseHo
8
Q
How to perform Origin and Insertion?
A
- Use reinforced thumb or finger kneading to the entire origin of the muscle
- Then move to the insertion and treat the entire tendon
- Use a kneading technique that is first cross fiber and then with fibre (similar to a small plus sign pattern)
- Rate is slow
- Pressure is moderate to deep
9
Q
What are the effects of O&I?
A
- Reduces muscle tone
- Reduces muscle spasm
- Creates a relaxation effect on the muscle
10
Q
What are the contraindications of O&I?
A
- Locally painful conditions
- Local acute conditions affecting tendon
- Hypotonic or atonic muscles
- Tissue fragility
- Pathologies of connective tissue
- Skin lesions
