Stress Testing Flashcards
What is the goal of cardiac stress testing?
Raise the patient’s blood pressure to determine if blood flow is reduced.
What increases the cardiac output during exercise in the early (initiation) and late phases?
Early: mainly increased stroke volume
Late: mainly increased heart rate
How is the patient’s “Age Predicting Maximum Heart Rate” (APMHR) calculated?
220-age
What is required in order for a cardiac stress test to be considered an accurate assessment according to heart rate?
Patient must reach at least 85% of APMHR
What is the main indication for stress testing?
Diagnose Coronary Artery Disease
Who should be stress tested in the age group 30-39?
Intermediate Risk Groups
Men and women with typical angina pectoris
Men with atypical angina pectoris
Who should be stress tested in the age group 40-49?
Intermediate Risk Groups
Women with typical angina pectoris
Men with atypical angina pectoris
Men with non-angina chest pain
Who should be stress tested in the age group 50-69?
Intermediate Risk Groups
Women with typical angina pectoris
Men and Women with atypical angina pectoris
Men with non-angina chest pain
What are the two modes of stress testing?
Exercise
Medication induced tachycardia if unable to exercise (dobutamine and adenosine)
Medication stress testing must always accompany what to be a valid test?
Imaging
Adenosine and Dobutamine with nuclear testing
Dobutamine with echocardiography
