14 finishers + 10 cleaners
Role of cleaners: Had control, low workload
Role of finishers: Lack of control, high workload, isolated, machine pace, wages dependent on finishers
What did Johansson et al find?
Stress was measured using urine sample (measured levels of adrenaline and noradrenaline) and finishers had higher stress hormones compared to cleaners, more absentees etc.
What are the weaknesses of Johansson et al’s study?
There is a small sample + low population validity
Beta bias as differences between males and females are minimised/ignored
What are the strengths of Johansson et al’s study?
Gives objective data = High validity
What people were involved in Marmot et al and what was their role?
Civil servants- 7372 people; men and women
High control civil servants
What did Marmot et al find?
If you have higher control in a job, fewer cases of cardiovascular disorders after 5 years
What were the positives of Marmot et al study?
Good sample size + high population validity
Longitudinal study -> see changes over time
