stress - psychobiological process Flashcards
stressor
A stressor is any stimulus that produces stress. This means that virtually anything can be a stressor and therefore a cause of stress to any individual
internal stressor
originates within the individual. eg. personal problem, pain, illness
external stressor
originates outside the individual from situations and events in the environment. eg. too much homework, nagged by parents, overcrowded train
acute stress
lasts for a relatively short time and causes our body to release adrenaline which can help us to accomplish assignments and even enhance our problem solving ability of physical performance.
sympathetic ns in flight fight response
- amygdala sends a signal to the hypothalamus. Adrenaline circulates in the blood activating various organs to prepare the body for action.
- hypothalamus stimulates the nearby pituitary gland to initiate a process for secretion of cortisol. parasympathetic nervous system returns body to homeostasis
primary data
Primary data is information collected directly from the source by the researcher for their own specific purpose
secondary data
Secondary data is information that was not collected directly by the current researcher but was collected at an earlier time by some else
quantitative data
Information that is expressed numerically. It summarises how much or how many there is of something. Eg. Raw scores, percentages, means, standard deviations etc.
qualitative data
Information that is not expressed numerically. It is information about the qualities or characteristics of what is being studied. Eg. Descriptions, words, meanings, photos, pictures, audio or video recordings and so on.
objective data
Information that is observable, measurable, verifiable and free from the personal bias of the researcher
subjective data
Information that is based on personal opinion, interpretation, point of view or judgement
chronic stress
stress that continues for a prolonged period of time. involves ongoing demands, pressures, worries that are constant and long lasting.
role of cortisol in acute stress
energises the body by increasing energy supplies such as blood sugar and enhancing metabolism.
role of cortisol in chronic stress
Increased blood glucose for brain and body, diversion of energy from non-essential functions
