Aim?
Aim- to create a method that estimates the extent to which life events are stressors

What is the SRRS?
The Social Readjustment Rating Scale (SRRS) , It looks at the life events that have occurred in a persons life and the impact they have.
Looks at how much readjustment is needed to cope with an event (causes stress) assumption is that the more life events you have experienced the more stressed you are

Methodology?
Methodology- Questionaire which was designed to see how much each life event was felt to be a stressor

participants?
Participants- 394 participants
•179 males
•215 females
All diff educational abilities, ethnicities and religions

Procedure?
Procedure-
•each participant asked to rate a series of 43 life events.
•marriage was given an arbitrary rating of 50 and each life event should be judged as requiring more or less readjustment
•ratings can be based on personal experience or perception of others experiences
•also be based on the amount of readjustment that would be required and the time it would take to readjust

Results?
Results-
Final SRRS completed based on mean scores allocated by participants.
•most events were rated as being less stressful than getting married, yet 6 were rated as higher:
*death of a spouse - 100 LCU
*divorce- 73 LCU
* imprisonment- 63 LCU
•correlation was strong in all but one group- agreement found between men and women but was weak between Black and White

Results-
Strengths-
•sample 394 participants (all diverse) can be argued to be representative
Weaknesses-
•not relevant to age groups - ie mortgage or Loan, marital seperation
•socially biased- Eurocentric - mortgage foreclosure, divorce
•doesn’t state whether positive or negative - highly subjective - ie Job Change
