Stress& Illness Flashcards
What do killer T cells do
Locate foreign cells, connect to cell and inject toxins into foreign cells to kill the cell.
Relationship between stress, cortisol& killer T cells ( immunosuppression)
Stress can suppress the immune system, the more stressed you are the more cortisol you produce, consequence is that you produce less killer T cells
Aim of Kiecolt Glasser(1984) stress&immune system functioning
Study aimed to investigate the effect the stress of important examinations had on the functioning of the immune system
Procedure of Kiecolt Glasser(1984) Stress&immune system functioning
Participants consisted of 75 medical students. Blood samples taken from students month before exam and during exam. Measured T cell activity in their blood. Students also given questionnaire to assess extraneous variable is stress.
Findings of Kiecolt Glasser research(1984) stress&immune system functioning
Found activity of T cells decreased between first and second samples. This is evidence of immune system being suppressed by a Chronic stressor.
What was Wilbert-Lampen(2008) study about. (acute stress)
Studied sudden emotional arousal, watching football. Heart attacks during Germany World Cup games 1996. On days when Germany played rate of heart attacks were higher. Acute stress can double the risk of heart attacks
