Managing Stress Flashcards
What do Benzodiazepines do
Work by enhancing the effect of the body’s natural calming substance. This substance is a neurotransmitter called GABA. GABA reduces stress by attracting Chloride into the cells. This numbs the cells and slows body’s stress response.
What do Beta Blockers do
Block adrenaline & noradrenaline. Reduce stress by binding to the receptors for these two hormones at key points. Means adrenaline released into the blood at times of stress is unable to affect the bodily systems.
What is stress inoculation therapy (SIT)
Conceptualisation phase (input) Stage 1
SIT begins with client and therapist working together to identify stressors and ability to cope with them. Main aim is for client to understand stressors can be overcome, by viewing them as a challenge.
What is stress inoculation therapy (SIT)
Skills &rehersal phase process stage 2
Client is taught several coping mechanisms, relaxing social skills, communication and cognitive reconstructing
What is Stress inoculation therapy (SIT)
Real life application output stage 3
Therapist gives chance for clients to participate in situations to try tout their skills to learn. This can become home work or role playing strategies.
What is biofeedback
Offers a combination of cognitive mindfulness and biological monitoring of stress response. The aim is to make individual aware of their biological stress responses. Client is trained to use physiological measure( heart rate) and apply relaxation techniques(meditation) to lower body’s stress response.
What is Budzynski (1973) phases of biofeedback training
1)Client learns to become aware of their physiological response and how it can be adjusted
2)Client learns how to use various techniques to control response
3)Client practices in stressful situations rather than safety of therapy room.
