Q

Describe the process of how stress hormone is realeased

A

SYMPATHETIC branch of the ANS becomes active and ADRENAL CORTEX secretes EPINEPHRINE, NOREPINEPHRINE, and STEROID stress hormones

Q

What happens as a results of released stress hormones?

A

It increases our energy consumption by the body so “vigorous phys activity” is made rapidly.

Q

What is EPINEPHRINE and where is released?

A

It’s essentially adrenaline and released by the adrenal cortex.

6
Q

How is Epinephrine used in the body?

A

It affects GLUCOSE metabolism causing the nutrients stores in our muscles to be burned. It increases BLOOD FLOW to muscles by increasing our HR. And results in increased blood pressure which contributes to MI (myocardial infarction) and CVD (cardiovascular arrest)

7
Q

How is NOREPINEPHRINE (NE) processed in our body?

A

It also increases BP and HR, in stressful situations it releases NE in the HYPOTHALMUS (ANS+metabolic process), FRONTAL LOBE (exec funct), and BASAL FOREBRAIN (wakefulness).

8
Q

Describe the pathway of the release of NE

A

The release presumably is mediated by the pathway from the CENTRAL NUCLEUS of AMYGDALA to NE centers in brain stem.

Q

What is GLUCOCORTICOID?

A

It’s a stress steroid hormone (e.g., cortisol). Called this bc of its strong influence on glucose metabolism.

Q

What does glucocorticoid do in our body?

A

Causes breakdown of protein to glucose – aids in fat breakdown to glucose – increase blood flow – indirectly decrease prod. of sex steroid hormones –

Q

Is glucocorticoid in every cell of the body?

A

Yes! Every cell has glucocorticoid receptors so they have a pervasive effect on the body.

Q

Describe the release process of GLUCOCORTICOID…

A

Paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of the hypothalamus secretes CORTICOTROPIN releasing factor (CRF) into capillaries connected to anterior pituitary —> Anterior Pituitary secretes Adrenocorticotropic Hormone (ACTH) into general vascular circulation —> The ACTH causes adrenal cortex to release GLUCOCORTICOIDS

CRF also released in brain and acts as a neuromodulator especially in limbic system i.e., PAG, locus coeruleus and central nucleus of amygdala.

Q

Research on health effects of stress

A

Concentration camp survivors had poorer health later in life, drivers on subways that injure or kill ppl, air traffic controllers all displayed negative health.

Q

What happens as a result of long-term exposure to glucocorticoid?

A

It’s thought to damage the body by INCREASING blood pressure resulting in MI AND CVA. Inhibits inflammatory response in healing. Biopsy showed wounds healed slower in caregivers of alzheimer’s patients.

17
Q

What does glucocorticoid (stress hormon/cortisol) do on the brain?

A

Destroys Neurons in CA1 of hippocampal formations in rats, which leads to decreased memory in old age.

18
Q

What beh and phys symptoms did rats exposed to stress show?

A

Impaired learning, impaired ltp in hippocampus, atrophy in hippocampus, increased amygdala size, increased glucocorticoid response in adulthood, offsprings didn’t show increased glucocorticoid response if mother adrenal cortex was removed.

19
Q

What happened when mother rats licked and groomed their baby rats?

A

Life long reduction in stress hormones as baby became adults.

20
Q

Adult rats exposed to stress resulted in…

A

Impaired learning & hippocampal abnormality.

21
Q

Monkeys who were picked on (i.e., bottom of social hierarchy) showed signs of what?

A

Gastric ulcers, enlarged adrenal glands, “completely destroyed” hippocampus.

22
Q

In a CT scan people who were tortured showed

A

brain degeneration

23
Q

Children with emotional maltreatment showed reduction where in the brain?

A

8% reduction in ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmpfc) VOLUME

24
Q

Ppl w/ chronic back pain had correlations to

A

Decreased cortical volume greatest in the dlPFC
