Acute Stress

A

Natural experiment to see if short term stressors had an effect on immune system functions. Volunteer sample of 75 medical students, blood sample took before examinations (low stress/control) and on the first day of exams (high stress). Measured NK cells on blood sample. Questionnaires also filled out by students to see life stressors. First day of exams students had significantly fewer NK cells. Acute stress reduced effectiveness of immune system.
