strep lungs Flashcards
what disease is more commonly known as strep throat and what bacteria causes it
Pharyngitis which is caused by streptococcus pyogenes
what are some characteristics associated with strep throat(pharyngitis)
- Inflammation of the mucous membranes in throat
- Fever and headache
- Person to person spread via droplets
- Infection developed 2-4 days after exposure
- Progession to scarlet fever, rheumatic fever or glomerulonephritis if left untreated
what can result if strep throat is left untreated
progression into scarlet fever
progression into rheumatic fever
progression into acute glomerluonphritis
what characterizes scralet fever
- Red rash on chest
- Tongue covered with a yellow-white coating which sheds resulting in strawberry tongue
these are due to exotoxin production and bacteria infecting the blood
what characterizes Rheumatic Fever
hugee inflamtion reponse
* Antibodies produced by the host attack self
* Inflammation of the heart, joints and kidneys.
what characterizes Acute glomerulonephritis
- Inflammation of renal glomeruli(kidney).
- Edema(protein in urine), hypertension, hematuria.
- Pale puffy eyes bc of fluid retention
what disease is caused by strep pneumonia
Pneumonia
what are some characteristics of Pneumonia
- Aspiration is what causes
- Organism gains entry to the lower airway (opportunistic)
- High fever and chills
- Cough and chest pain
- Localized to lower lobes of lungs
- Productive cough—fluid and mucus in the lungs
Sinusitis and otitis media charateristics
- Cause of acute infections in lungs
- Preceded by a viral infection
- Middle ear infection common in children
Meningitis causitive agent
Caused by- streptococcus Pneumoniae
disease characteristics of meningitis
- Spread of infection to the CNS
- Very severe high mortality
