CBT is very effective - March et al. compared the effects of CBT with anti depressants and a combination of the two in 327 adolescents with a main diagnosis of depression.

What happened after 36 weeks?

A

After 36 weeks 81% of the CBT group, 81% of the antidepressants group and 86% of the CBT and antidepressants group were significantly improved. Thus CBT seemed just as effective as medication and helpful alongside medication. Of course the benefit of CBT there are no side-effects either. This suggests there is a good case for making CBT the first choice of treatment in the NHS.

Why does it have long-term benefits?

A

It has long-term benefits as the techniques involved are used continually to stop symptoms occuring. In this sense it is also empowering for the client - they can help themselves through altering how they think.
