Super Supraglottic Swallow Used For..
- reduced airway closure
- aspiration before or during the swallow
Super Supraglottic Swallow Instructions
“bear down”
Take a break and hold it tight while bearing down
Continue to hold your breath and bear down as you swallow
Immediately after you swallow cough then immediately swallow hard again
Effortful Swallow Used For..
- residue in valleculae
- reduced BOT retraction to PPW
Effortful Swallow Instructions
squeeze all the swallowing muscles HARD when you swallow
Masako Tongue Hold
BOT Exercise
Stick out your tongue and hold it between your lips or teeth and try to swallow
Shaker Used for
Strap muscles
Strengthen suprahyoids for fwd movement
reduce post swallow pyrifrorm residue
Shaker Instructions
3x/day for 6 weeks (lots of compliance here..)
lie down on back on floor - shoulders flat
lift up your head and bring chin to chest while keeping shoulders flat against bed
hold head for 60s then lower and rest
Repeat x3
then part two requires you to lift head then chin to chest then immediately lower head
repeat x30
Controlled Swallow
Good for people with spillage
helps to increase awareness of where the bolus is to reduce spillage
