A small number of repetitions of high force contractions
What affect does strength training have on muscle mass?
Increases muscle mass by enlarging type IIb and sometimes type IIa fibres
What are the two phases of strength training?
Neural phase
Hypertrophic phase
What occurs in the neural phase of strength training?
CNS response and recruitment of largest muscle units increases to increase the maximal firing rate
How long does strength training need to continue to fix activation problems?
2-3 months
What occurs in the hypertrophic phase of strength training?
Enlargement of existing fibres which then split longitudinally so that the fibres become more numerous and the surrounding connective tissue also strengthens
What kind of exercise is used in endurance training?
Large number of repetitions of low force contractions
What affect does endurance training have on muscle mass?
Decrease in muscle mass as there is no demand for increased strength so whilst type I fibres may enlarge type II fibres atrophy
What type of training will improve cardiovascular and metabolic performance?
Endurance training
