Strength Training Flashcards
Hypertrophy
Increase in the size of muscle fibres and connective tissues
Isotonic
Involves exercises where the muscle shortens and lengthens
Isometric
exercises where the muscle does not change length
Isokinetic
muscle contracts and shortens when overcoming a load, but does so at a constant rate
Free/fixed Weights
dumbbells, barbells, medicine balls and kettle-bells. Allow a wide range of exercises, muscle groups and types of contractions to be catered for. Good technique is needed to avoid injury
Elastic
Athletes who are recovering from injury, travel extensively or seeking strength development in a very specific movement
Hydraulic
Such as swimming, consistent resistance through the full range of motion can mimic the resistance experienced in swimming
