The play structure follows a symbolic journey as represented by blanches travel from the plantation of rural south to the induastrial urban New Orleans
Symbolism of the varsouviana polka
The tune to which Blanche and her young husband Allen grey were dancing and the last time she saw him. Earlier on in the day she caught him with his male friend I bed, and told him she was “disgusted” in him so he later went and shot himself in the head.
The varsouviana polka plays multiple times throughout the play when Blanche feels remorse for blanches death, therefore represents blanches loss of innocence. The suicide of her young husband Blanche loved was the event that triggered her mental decline . She here’s the polka every-time she panics an looses her grip on reality.
The symbolism of the streetcar
Williams stated that the streetcar is “the ideal metaphor for the human living condition” is symbolic of the power of desire being the driving force behind the characters actions. When it takes over characters must submit to its power and they are carried to the finishing line.
