Streaming - Textbook Topic 2 Flashcards
What does streaming involve?
Separating children into different ability groups or classes called streams - each ability group is taught separately from the others for all subjects.
When is the self fulfilling prophecy likely to occur according to studies ?
When children ate streamed.
What does Becker show teachers seeing the w/c as?
Lacking ability and have low expectations of them which leads w/c children likely to put themselves into a lower stream.
What is difficult once you’ve been streamed?
To move up to a higher stream which creates a self-fulfilling prophecy which pupils live up to their teachers low expectations by underachieving.
What did Douglas find children placed in a lower stream at age 8 suffered?
A decline in IQ score by 11.
What did Gillborn and Youdell show in their study of two London secondary schools?
How teachers use stereotypical notions of ‘ability’ to stream pupils and fund teachers are less likely to see w/c pupils as having ability which as a result meant these pupils were likely to be placed in lower streams and entered for lower tier GCSES which denies them knowledge and opportunity needed to gain good grades and widens the class gap n achievement.
What did Gillborn and Youdell link streaming to?
The policy of publishing exam league tables which rank schools according to its exam performance e.g. in terms of the % of pupils gaining 5 or more GCSE grades A*-C.
Why do schools need to achieve a good league table position?
To attract pupils and funding.
What do Gillborn and Youdell call ‘A-C economy’?
A system in which schools focus their time, effort and resources on those pupils they see as having the potential to get five grade Cs and boost the schools league table position.
What do authors argue the A-C economy produces?
Educational triage.
What are three types of pupils schools categorise?
- Those who pass anyway and can be left to get on with it.
- Those with potential who will be helped to get grade C or better.
- Hopeless cases who are doomed to fail.
Which types of people are more likely to be labelled as ‘hopeless cases’?
Black and w/c pupils which creates a self fulfilling prophecy and failure.
What does the need to gain a good league table position drive? And what does this produce?
Drives educational triage which becomes the basis for streaming.
