What is Open Stratification System?
opportunity to advance up in the social class ladder i.e USA
What is Closed Stratification System?
no opportunity to advance up in the social ladder i.e India
What is Achieved Status?
status a person chooses, such as a level of education or income
What is Ascribed Status?
status outside of an individuals control such as sex or race
What is Social Mobility?
ability to change positions within a social stratification system
What is Intergenerational Mobility?
a change that occurs between generations
What is Upward Mobility?
movement up the social ladder
What is Downward Mobility?
movement down the social ladder
What is the Underclass?
subset of poor people who live in the inner city, unemployed, dependent on welfare, crime filled drug ridden neighborhoods, poor quality schools, teenage mothers, high school dropouts, lack of skills and education
What is Culture of Poverty?
values and behaviors of the poor that often keep them poor
What is Poverty Tax?
Not real tax. It is a factor of making essentials more expensive.
