Social Groups and Deviance Flashcards
Social Disorganization Theory
weak social ties and a lack of social control; society has lost the ability to enforce norms with some groups (functionalism)
Merton’s Strain Theory
lack of ways to reach socially accepted goals by accepted methods (functionalism)
Sutherland’s Differential Association Theory
learning and modeling deviant behavior seen in other people to the individual (symbolic interactionism)
Shaw & McKay’s Cultural Deviance Theory
conformity to the cultural norms of lower class society (functionalism)
Chambliss’ Labeling Theory
study on how social class influence people’s perception about two groups, Saints and Roughnecks (The eight boys in the group Chambliss called the Saints came from middle-class families. Society expected them to do well in life. The six boys in the other group, the Roughnecks, came from lower-class families in poorer neighborhoods.) They were treated differently for the same thing but the roughnecks were treated with more punishment. Self fullfilling prophecy with labelling. Saints had a better life than the roughnecks.
Milgram’s Experiment
how people follow orders. tested on obedience and willingly shock subjects when directed by a person of authority.
Solomon Asch’s Conformity Theory
to study how people will conform to other people in certain situations when they know they’re wrong. Pressured in group agreement.
Sherif’s Robbers Cave Experiment
focused heavily on the concept of a ‘group’ & what a perception of belonging to a group can actually do to the relationships of members within it and their relationships with people outside their group. (conflict theory)
