A study in an African American school where the teachers divided the class into fast, average and slow learners. Rist found that social class was the underlying basis for assigning children to different groups. Students who were more expected from would do better while those who lacked attention did poorly. It followed them from kindergarten and created a self fullfilling prophecy of labelling.
