strategies to manage traffic in glasgow Flashcards
building new roads
M74 extension saves around 15 mins on journey times
around 20,000 vehicles are removed from the M8 so there is less car emissions.
cost £692 million to build and people in nearby areas were required to leave their homes and/or shut down businesses to make way for the road.
bus lanes
roads that only buses can drive in. help improve traffic flow and journey times.
however, more needs to be done to encourage people to use public transport (eg. improving bus reliability times).
Bus lanes take up lots of space on the road so more congestion could be built with cars.
Bus gates fine motorists £30 if they drive through them and so they are an effective deterrent as the number of motorists using bus lanes has decreased.
multistory car parks
multistory car parks provide convenient parking places
however they encourgae use of private transport and structure needs to be rethought as electric cars are too heavy
LEZs
Low Emission Zones (LEZs) improve air quality and have envirnomental benefits - especially beneficial for old and very young
LEZs reduce pollution from vehicle emissions and encourages other transport methods (eg walking or cycling)
