In Rio, more houses are needed because people want to live closer to the city. Also, people are now living longer and are having more babies.
danger
The power lines in the favelas are overloaded by people trying to illegally obtain electricity. These are very dangerous and could cause fires or electrocution.
People also have very limited access to basic amenties (eg. running water)
not enough land
Rio is surrounded by lots of hills and is next to the coastline so there is no space to build houses. There is also high flooding risks because of how close Rio is to the ocean
landslides
The favelas are built on hills and so when it rains lots of landslides occur. These can damage and sometimes destroy houses in the favelas.
illegal area
The favelas are illegal housing areas and so they receive no support from the Government. This then allows crime gangs to do as they please and so the streets are dangerous
diseases
The favelas are extremely overcrowded and so diseases can spread a lot easier. There is very limited space for facilities and a lack of privacy for individuals.
informal jobs/crime
People in the favelas don’t have consistent income because they have informal jobs. People then turn to crime in the favelas in order to make money which makes them more dangerous to live in
sewer
open sewers in the favelas which are unhygienic and smell
