What are ways we can enhance employee safety and wellness? This is First objective (Enhance employee safety and wellness) of Goal 3 (Invest in our People)
- Employee wellness is of great importance to Department Leadership and it has been a priority for me. Our people are our #1 asset. It’s contained within Goal 3 - Invest in our people. As an example, I attended training by San Diego state where retired Deputy Commissioner Skip Carter spoke of the dangers of 12 hour shifts, Officer safety, alertness, productivity, etc. After training I removed Visalia CHP from 12. This was before Department mandated. But it was done to keep our people safe.
- Encourage Employee Wellness Programs at Areas and Division including participating in Annual Fitness Challenge. Team Building/Morale! All commanders conference modeled it. Sleep and stress management course. Excellent.
- Be involved in Division Occupational Safety Committee program and meetings and ensure our commanders are engaged at the command level.
- Solicit feedback from employees of safety concerns and promote portal (app) and ensure employees are aware of Dept services EAP, peer support.
- Critically review my sectors 121Ds to track workers compensation cases and look for injury trends. Monthly spread sheet sent to commands…accountability. -Ensure we maintain contact with our employees
- Work with commanders to improve case management.
- Ensure commanders are personally contacting injured employees.
- Use Division subject matter experts to enhance Area training and provide training on Officer Safety. Consult OESA as needed. Robust training is critical to employee wellness.
- Audit training to ensure compliance (HPM 22.1 inspections if indicators or deficiencies)
- Discuss current public safety incidents (Active shootings, patrol car crashes, OIS) to learn from other agencies/situations at Division All Commanders Conference. Sector meetings, one on ones, area visits training days, briefings, staff meetings.
