Q

D: What does ‘division of labour’ in society mean?

E: What does ‘role allocation’ mean?

C: How might feminists criticise this theory?

A

D: That all paid and unpaid jobs in society need to be filled by different (the most qualified) people.

E: schools perform the function of sorting the right people into the right jobs.

C: functionalists like D and M believe that men and women are naturally/ biologically suited to different roles. Feminists would argue that this is a social construct and leads to women being in unpaid/ lower paid roles.

Q

D: Why is it important that all roles are filled in society?

E: Why shouldn’t a person do a job they aren’t qualified/ skilled enough for?

C: Why is it a problem for society if people are over-qualified for a role?

A

D: We need all roles filled, otherwise society doesn’t work effectively. If we have too many doctors and not enough farmers, society not run as it should.

E: Because it is inefficient and potentially dangerous (pilot, brain brainsurgeon). The role won’t be performed properly.

C: It is a waste of talent if highly skilled people do low-skilled jobs. Society won’t be efficient, or move forward.

Q

D: Why are some people paid large salaries according to D and M?

E: Why is inequality necessary in society?

C: How would D and M explain the existence of poverty?

A

D: The most important jobs in society need to have large salaries so that the most skilled/ talented people want to compete to get the role. That way, society has the best of the best doing the most important jobs.

E: Because not all roles are equally as important and don’t require the same levels of skill. If a doctor was paid as much as a shop worker, people would’t do the difficult training necessary.

C: Poverty is a consequence of needing to pay the most important roles the most money. This is fair because schools are meritocratic and people earn their grades.

Q

D: What value do all people need to be socialised into?

E: Evaluate: do the most important roles get paid the most money in society today?

C: Evaluate: are unpaid roles unimportant?

A

D: the value of achievement- of working conscientiously to do the best that you can in any job.

E: Not necessarily, some (eg doctors) get paid well, but not as much as footballers.

C: Unpaid roles, especially performed by women in terms of child care, care for the elderly and sick are important to keep society functioning.
