Family 1: Delphy and Leonard Flashcards
D: According to Delphy and Leonard, what does the family do?
E: What key term would feminists use to describe the family?
C: What type of feminists are D and L, and what does this mean?
D: The family maintains male power over women.
E: Patriarchy: the family maintains patriarchy in society.
C: They are radical feminists. They believe that all forms of male dominance needs to be eradicated from society.
D: How do D and L describe the way the family is organised?
E: What shape would they use to describe the organisation of the family?
C: How is this organisation maintained?
D: Men have more power and control what women do in the family.
E: A triangle. It is a hierarchy with men at the top.
C: Women can’t challenge male power, as their domestic role prevents them from earning as much in employment.
D: How do D and L think women are treated in the family?
E: What key term would D and L use to describe the way women are treated in the family?
C: What are the 4 ways in which women are controlled in the family?
D: The family takes advantage of women.
E: Exploitation
C: 1= The way their labour is used by their husbands. 2=Their work in the home and in employment is not valued. 3= They are financially dependent on their husbands 4= They are subordinate in the family.
D: What research method did D and L use?
E: Name 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage of this method.
C: Why might this method be useful specifically for studying patriarchal control in the family.
D: secondary sources. They used existing research on families, including three research on factory worker’s families.
E: Adv= cheaper, quicker, easier to access, can be more representative. Disad= Can’t tell how valid the study is.
C: Secondary sources are useful for the family generally as they are a private space and hard to access. In terms of patriarchal control, it could be even more difficult to gain access, as men wouldn’t admit/ recognise their power. Women are busy performing the triple shift because of patriarchal control, so don’t have time to be involved in research about the subject!
D: How could you criticise this theory with the idea that families have changed?
E: How would Marxists and functionalists criticise this theory?
C: What criticism would be the same for D and L, Parsons and Zaretsky?
D: There are lots of types of families now. More women are taking the breadwinner role.
E: Marxists= the family benefits capitalism, not patriarchy. functionalism= There has been a growth of symmetrical families. Men and women have different, but not unequal roles.
C: None of them question the concept of the ‘conventional family’. They are writing about a traditional nuclear family.
