Strain And Stress Flashcards

1
Q

What is Stress?

A

Stress = force/area
Stress = Pa (N/m2)
Force = N (newtons)
Area = m (meters squared)

Q

What is strain?

A

Strain = changed in length / initial length
Strain = ϵ (unit less)
Change in length = L (meters)
Initial length = L (meters)

Q

Breaking stress

A

Breaking stress is the stress required to break the material.
The maximum tensile stress an object can withstand is called the ultimate tensile stress (strength).
Some materials can undergo some strain beyond the point of ultimate tensile stress before breaking.

Q

What are the two different types of forces?

A

Some forces stretch the object.
These forces are called tensile forces.
Some forces squash the object.
These forces are called compressive forces.

Q

How to calculate young modulus?

A

E = tensile stress / tensile strain
E = Pa
Tensile stress = (Pa)
Tensile strain = (unit less)
