What is memory and what is it referred to as
Memory is where the computer holds all the programs and data it is busy working on. Memory is referred to as primary storage.
What is RAM?
RAM stands for random access memory and it comes in sticks called DIMMS that plug into the motherboard . Ram is where the cpu fetches instruction and data that it needs to work on
What is storage and what is it referred to as
Storage is where programs and data are kept permanently and it’s referred to as secondary storage.
What is online storage ?
Refers to disk space that is allocated to you on a server
What are the advantages of online storage?
- saves space on the users computer
- you can easily share files with people
- data is still accessible if your computer crashes
- changes are all saved in one place
What are the disadvantages of online storage?
- if the company goes bankrupt all data can be lost
- only accessible when you have an internet connection
- you have no control over backup and security
- you pay for the bandwidth used
Name two online storage facilities

What is backing up
Involves making copies of your data
What is important to consider when backing up
- data should be easy to restore
- back-up should be quick and easy
Why are cds and dvds no longer considered to be ideal for creating backups?
They are slow and unreliable
What is archiving ?
This refers to making copies of files that are kept for reference when needed.
How do you manage back ups?
Use back up software to compress data.
How do you solve problems with CDs
If it’s dirty wipe clean with a damp cloth. If you are struggling to read it try writing at a lower speed
Explain formatting and reformatting
Involves preparing a disk to store data on it.
What is disk defragmentation
Fragmentation occurs over time. Files get split up and scattered on the disk. A disk defragmenter puts parts of files back together again.
