Local Area Networks(module 2.1 Flashcards
List three types of networks
PAN: organized around an individual
HAN: runs through a home
Internet: large worldwide computer network.
What are the basic components of a network?
Hardware
Communication/connection method
Network software
What are the three general terms used for computers in a network
Workstations,clients and servers
What does workstation refer to?
A workstation refers to a desktop computer connected to the network
What does client refer to?
Generally refers to computing devices that can use the networks resources
What is a file server used for and list the advantages
It is used to store files.
Advantages:
User is able to access files from any computer on the network
Users do not have to worry about backing up the files
What is an email server?
Handles all email needs of the organization
What is an internet or proxy server?
Allows security control for viruses and internet outage
What are web servers
These can be used to host websites
What are print severs?
These are used to handle all the printing requirements for a network
What are database servers?
Provide access to data stored in a central database
What is a switch?
A devices used to connect computers in a network with cables so that communication can occur
What is LAN?
Network which connects computers in a small area such as a school
What are the advantages of using WLAN
Installation is far easier than with a cabled LAN
It is easier and more practical to make use of wireless connectivity
It avoids clutter in terms of cables
What is a utp and what is it used for?
unshielded twisted pair and it is used to connect computers in a LAN
What does fiber optic do?
It uses light to send data therefore making it very expensive
What is the difference between a fiber cable and a utp cable
A fiber cable transfers data a lot faster than a utp cable
Fiber cables can span much longer distances
Fiber cable is immune to eavesdropping
What does the 1000 gigabit specification refer to?
The data transmission speed that the switch or NIC can support
What are the advantages of connecting computers in a LAN
- Software apps can be shared by users
- internet access can be monitored
- files can be transferred without the use of devices
What are the disadvantages of connecting to a LAN?
- Can be expensive to install and maintain
- if the file server is faulty , nobody can access their files
- performance can decrease
What is an aup and what is it used for?
An acceptable use policy. It outlines rights and responsibilities of network users.
What should be included in an AUP?
- Restrictions in terms of what should be accessed online
- Clear consequences of violating conditions
- procedures to follow if users find they are victims of identity theft
