Storage Flashcards
What is secondary storage?
Long term storage that remains after the computer is turned off.
What is RAM?
Short term memory that is volatile (is lost when the computer is turned off)
Give examples of magnetic storage
Hard drive
Magnetic tape
What are the properties of magnetic storage?
Speed: Fast
Capacity: Store large amounts of data (1-2tb)
Portability: Not portable
Cost: Low cost
Durability: Physical knocks can cause the read-write heads to damage the disk and corrupt data
Give examples of optical storage
Cds
DvDs
Blu-ray
What are the properties of optical storage?
Speed: Slow Capacity: Store small amounts of data Portability: Portable Cost: Cheap Durability: Data can not be written over. Data degrades over time
Give examples of solid state storage
Flash drive
SD Card
What is meant by a storage device’s capacity?
The amount of data it can store
What is meant by a storage device’s speed?
How fast it can access the data
What is meant by a storage device’s portability?
How easily it can be moved between places and devices
What is meant by a storage device’s durability?
How long it takes for the data to degrade and how much physical damage the device can sustain
What is meant by a storage device’s reliability?
How consistently does it perform
What is meant by a storage device’s cost?
How much does it cost per KD, MB or GB
What are the properties of solid state storage?
Speed: Very fast
Capacity: large amounts of data (1-2tb)
Portability: very portable
Cost: Cost more than hard drives and optical storage
Durability: limited number of read-write cycles
What is ROM?
Read Only Memory
Instructions permanently etched into a ROM chip.
When power is turned off instructions remain on the chip
