Stomata Flashcards
1
Q
How many guard cells surround one stoma?
A
•Two guard cells
2
Q
What would happen if the stomata was permanently open?
A
•The plant would get no water meaning it would dry up and die due to the water being left in the stomata vein evaporated by the sunlight because it’s not being taken in.

Q
In low light what do guard cells do?
A
- In lower light the guard cells lose water and become flaccid causing the stomata to close up.
- Normally the close in the dark when no CO2 is needed for photosynthesis.

Q
What does the turgid property benefit to the plant?
A
- It supports the weight of the plant which is especially important considering there is no wood like tissue.
- If the plant looses water faster it can be absorbed, meaning the cells then lose turgor pressure and become flaccid.
- This results in wilting
