Cell Structure Flashcards
1
Q
What are chloroplasts?
Only plant cells
A
- Chloroplasts are found in plant cells
- They are filled with chlorophyll which makes the leaves green.
- They absorb sunlight so the plant can carry out the process of photosynthesis.
2
Q
What are the mitochondria?
A
- This is where respiration takes place in order for energy to be released
- gluecose and oxygen are changed into energy
3
Q
What is the cytoplasm?
A
- A jelly like substance
- This is where chemical reactions take place in order to keep the cell alive.
- These reactions are controlled by the enzymes in the cell.
4
Q
What is the cell wall?
Only in plant cells
A
- Covers the cell membrane
* Made of tough cellulose giving the cell strength and support.
5
Q
What is the nucleus?
A
- Contains all of the genetic material to produce new cells
* Controls the activity of the cell including the chemical processes.
6
Q
What is the vacuole?
A
- Filled with a weak solution called cell sap containing salt and sugar.
- It also supports the cell
7
Q
What is the cell membrane?
A
- Thin, skin like layer inside of the cell wall
* It gives the cell its shape and controls what enters and leaves the cell.
8
Q
What are the Ribosomes?
A
- Small, normally circular.
- Ribosomes are the protein builders or the protein synthesizers of the cell.
- They are like construction guys who connect one amino acid at a time and build long chains.
- Ribosomes are special because they are found in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes.
